The University of Maryland Medical System announced a $ 5.1 million initiative to recruit nurses and other clinical experts to work at the state’s community colleges.

“As a system, we are committed to improving health outcomes for the communities we serve,” Lisa Rowen, senior vice president of UMMS, said in a press release.

“And in the spirit of the community, we have strengthened our partnerships with community colleges whose health professions programs are an excellent workforce resource, including schools in Maryland and with the Delaware Technical Community. Middle School.”

Some of the hospitals in the system already had relationships with community colleges in their area, but the release said the initiative establishes a “comprehensive and unified partnership strategy with community colleges.”



The UMMS Community College Tuition Assistance Incentive Program has 600 openings – 300 for RNs and 300 for other specific clinical positions. Eligible positions in addition to registered nurses include licensed practical nurses, surgical technicians, radiographers, respiratory therapists, certified practical nurses and patient care technicians.

Upon graduation and with the necessary certifications and orientation at the hospital, newly hired registered nurses are eligible for $ 12,000 in grants, and unregistered nurses are eligible for $ 5,000 in grants. subsidies.

“The demand for qualified clinical positions is at an all time high and we want to be the employer of choice for community college graduates seeking employment in the health professions,” Rowen added. “We hope these funds will help graduates cover a large portion of their education expenses and further differentiate UMMS from other healthcare employers.”

  • Delaware Technical Community College.

Recipients are required to work in their UMMS organization: nurses must engage full-time for two years and unauthorized nurses must engage for one year.

Applications are reviewed by a group of clinical care, human resources and finance staff at each site.

The program is part of a larger system effort to invest in its workforce. He said some examples of that commitment include a minimum wage of $ 15 for all team members and the waiver of the maximum paid time off accrued during the pandemic.
