Jadavpur University Tops State Universities in Nature Index Ranking

Jadavpur University has been ranked first by the prestigious Nature Index among all state universities in the country, according to a statement released by the university on Tuesday.

Institutions are listed according to ‘count’ (number of research papers by the institution’s authors) and ‘share’ (the percentage of the institution’s authors per paper).

A high share value indicates an institution’s more fractional contribution to research publications, according to the release.

Based on the value of publication shares, Jadavpur University ranks first among all state universities in India, according to the release.

The index is a research wing of the science journal Nature and each year it ranks top institutions based on the number of papers and scientific papers published in top-tier journals.

The ranking was announced for the year 2022 based on publications of primary research articles in 82 leading scientific journals between December 1, 2020 and November 30, 2021, the statement said.

The journals were selected by two panels comprising nearly 60 scientists.

JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Suranjan Das told PTI that the university’s ranking is proof of the exemplary and consistent standard of research followed by faculty and researchers.

Stressing that the honor is more important because JU is a state-funded institution having received “little central allocation”, Das said that “if we had gotten more financial subsidies from the Union government, we would have certainly could have done much better”.

The ranking is important because the pandemic situation has disrupted university activities, but JU has overcome the obstacles with the involvement of professors and students, Das said.

Jadavpur University ranked 19th in the field of physical sciences among all Indian higher education and research institutions, which includes all universities, IIMs, IITs and research institutes.

In the field of chemistry, Jadavpur University ranked 23rd among all higher education and research institutions in the country, according to the release.

Jadavpur University ranks fourth among all universities in the country and first among state universities in this category.

University of Hyderabad, University of Delhi and Hindu University of Benaras are above JU in this category among Indian universities.

In the field of earth and environmental sciences, Jadavpur University is ranked 11th among all higher education and research institutions in the country.

Jadavpur University ranks fourth among all Indian universities with only Benaras Hindu University, Savitribai Phule Pune University and Cotton University above JU among Indian universities.

Considering publications in all fields, JU is ranked 24th among all higher education and research institutions in the country.
